regions appears to be an objectively true assessment. Facing this
reality, it would not be a wise attitude to ignore or minimise thiscrisis. We must take it into account, try to evaluate its scope andmagnitude, and strive to find ways to overcome it. This is the goal pursued, with realism and hope, by this booklet Preferential Option for the Family that I now introduce.

The crisis of the family is not the only one afflicting the world today. There are others, and it is not uncommon to find they are mutually related and condition one another. For example, we can think about the use of falsehood in all its forms as a ‘legitimate’ resource to address complex situations; the proliferation of selfish behaviour; the scandalous gaps between those who enjoy a disporportionate and even luxurious well-being and the crowd of those who lack even the strictly necessary; the monstrous expansion of drug trafficking and addiction, and other events that threaten the very roots of human society.
